Churdhar Wildlife Sanctuary

Churdhar Wildlife Sanctuary is a picturesque sanctuary overlooking the Chur Peak, which is the highest outer Himalayan peak in Himachal Pradesh. It lies in the Sirmaur and Shimla districts. Pilgrims visiting the Lord Shiva temple and other temples nearby enjoy stopping over at the Churdhar Sanctuary.

Area and Altitude: The sanctuary is spread across an area of 66 square kilometers and is situated at an elevation of 2,000 to 3,647 meters above sea level.

Forest cover: This west Himalayan ecological zone has three types of forest cover including kharsu oak forest, western mixed coniferous forest and alpine pastures. Cattle, mountain sheep and goats of the nomadic Gujjars are seen grazing in the pastures of the sanctuary......wildlife pic churdhar

Climate and visiting season: Since the sanctuary is at a high altitude, it has a temperate climate with temperatures ranging from about 5 to 20 degrees centigrade. You can visit the sanctuary during the summer and autumn seasons.

Flora at the Churdhar Sanctuary: The main trees in the sanctuary are oak and deodar. You will find numerous herbs around the region that have medicinal properties. Some of them are Aloe vera (Dhrit Kumari), Wild Himalayan Cherry and Amaranthus spinosus (Chulai).

Churdhar is also called Chur Chandni, which means mountain dressed in moonlight. This highly captivating Churdhar Mountain is part of the Shivalik ranges, and is at an elevation of around 11965 ft. From the summit, you get a panoramic view of the lowland tracts on the south and snow clad ranges, including the peaks of Badrinath and Kedarnath in the Garhwal region towards the north.

You can also enjoy the view of Gangetic plains, the satluj river and hills of Shimla and Chakrata on a bright sunny day. Below the summit is a deodar-roofed temple of Srigul housing a lingam dedicated to Lord Shiva (Chooreshwar Mahadev)......people who belive in shiv mahadev and join this place pls clik here ......:)suresh sharma group :)

For almost six months, the north face of the mountain is snow clad, and below that the flanks are covered with verdant forests. The Churdhar peak is only marginally higher than the long east-west ridgeline separating the rivers Tons and Giri.

The peak is famous traking destination. A well-defined trail from Sarain leads you through deodar trees. It is a day long trek, and from the rest-house at Sarain, a four hour up-hill trek will lead you to the temple of Srigul. From the temple, it takes half an hour climb through rocky terrain on the west side to reach the peak. Alternatively, the peak can also be approached from Dadahu via Sangrah, Bhawai, Gandhuri, and Naura. You trek on a bridled path for around 48 km to reach the peak. Also, another easier approach to the peak is from the Solan Rajgarh Menus road side. From Nahura, it is a 16 km walk to the top.
